The complete series has been a complete choker, from the very first test in Perth to this very last match in Sydney. India had their moments initially but Australia kept turning back and then held the upper hand. During this final session, the beaming Cummins walks up to Allan Border to collect the trophy, one that evaded for close to ten years. One of the most fascinating aspects is that only four players from this squad have held the BGT.
India’s chances of remaining in the running for the WTC final relied on Jasprit Bumrah, but his absence diminished those prospects. For an individual who significantly impacted this series, holding the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler during a tour of Australia, it was unfortunate that he couldn’t participate in the concluding match, although he had already contributed enough to earn the Player of the Series title.
After exiting the SCG on the second day for back scans, Bumrah came back to bat at No. 11 on the third day but was not fit to bowl. All the initial visuals had foreshadowed Bumrah’s absence. He did not warm up alongside the other bowlers and merely practiced a little shadow-bowling. Subsequently, after being the final India player to be out, for a duck, he did not take the field at all for India’s defense of 161. Due to his past back problems, India needed to handle him with extreme care.
The target was significant for Australia, particularly on this fiery SCG pitch, yet it seemed much smaller when Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna bowled the new ball erratically. The duo allowed 12 runs through wides and byes on the leg side during the initial two overs. Despite Prasidh’s tightening performance and claiming three wickets, one of which was Steven Smith, the absence of Bumrah weighed heavily on India like Coleridge’s albatross.
The batters didn’t simplify things for India’s weakened bowling lineup. They collapsed to 4 for 16 in 7.5 overs on the third morning, finishing with a total of 157. Scott Boland, who may not have participated in this series if Josh Hazlewood had been healthy and might not be guaranteed a spot in Australia’s upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka, achieved his first ten-wicket haul in professional cricket to expedite India’s. Overall with the perfect team collaboration Australia won the match by six wickets.
